What Is Our Mission?

The mission of A Fox of a Feather is to advance rigorous, independent research on the role of guns in American society and to translate that evidence into accessible, public-facing education that promotes health, safety, and well-being.

Led by an experienced team of researchers and educators, A Fox of a Feather is dedicated to the scientific study of firearms as a social and public health issue. Our research examines: the social determinants of gun ownership, exposure, and gun policy support; the impacts of firearms on health and well-being; patterns of injury and mortality; community-level consequences; and the cultural and political contexts in which firearms are embedded. Through interdisciplinary and ethically grounded inquiry, A Fox of a Feather seeks to produce high-quality, empirical knowledge that improves our understanding of how firearms affect individuals, families, and communities across the United States.

In support of its educational mission, the organization disseminates research findings to the general public, educators, health professionals, journalists, and other stakeholders through reports, educational materials, social media, peer-reviewed scientific studies, and other resources. This work is intended to foster informed public understanding, encourage evidence-based decision-making, and contribute to efforts that reduce gun-related injury and death.

A Fox of a Feather operates on a strictly nonpartisan basis and does not engage in lobbying or political advocacy. Its activities are guided by the principles of scientific integrity, transparency, equity, and public benefit, with the overarching goal of using research and education to improve population health and reduce the preventable harms that are associated with firearms.
